Keys to efficient, safe industrial wayfinding

In industrial environments, clear signage isn't an extra: it's a necessity. Beyond complying with regulations, good wayfinding can prevent accidents, improve workflows and help everyone on site – from operators to visitors – know where to go and how to act in any situation.

So how can you tell whether your factory is really well signposted? Which signs are essential, and which might be outdated or badly placed? Read on.

1. More than signs: wayfinding as part of the safety system

Signage is often seen as a simple visual add-on: a sticker, a sign, an arrow. But in reality, it is an active part of the occupational risk prevention system. A badly placed or barely visible sign is almost the same as having none at all.

Signs must:

Be visible from where the risk begins.

Be in good condition, with no wear that makes them hard to read.

Comply with current regulations (Spanish Royal Decree 485/1997) in design, colour and symbols.

2. Dynamic signage for changing environments

A factory isn't a static environment. Processes change, lines are reorganised and machinery is upgraded. That's why signage should be reviewed regularly to avoid contradictions or signs that no longer make sense.

It's a good idea to carry out visual audits from time to time: walk around the site, observe and spot which signs have lost effectiveness or no longer do their job.

3. Critical areas where signage can't fail

Although the whole plant must be well signposted, there are areas where the margin for error is zero:

Forklift and internal vehicle traffic areas.

Emergency exits and evacuation routes.

Electrical panels, ATEX zones or chemicals.

First aid points and fire extinguishers.

At these points, signage must not only be clear – there must also be a visual hierarchy that helps people quickly identify the type of message (prohibition, mandatory action, information, etc.).

4. International symbols and quick reading

Good wayfinding doesn't depend on language. The most effective signs are the ones any worker can understand at a glance, regardless of their mother tongue or reading level.

To achieve this:

Use standardised symbols (ISO 7010).

Avoid long or unnecessary text.

Make sure colours do their job (red for prohibitions, blue for mandatory actions, yellow for warnings).

5. The right materials for each environment

Not every sign works in every condition. A sign that works in an office may be useless in a dusty, humid building or one with extreme temperatures.

Keep in mind:

Signs that are photoluminescent in areas where power cuts may occur.

Materials that are weather-resistant outdoors.

Vinyls or supports with industrial adhesives on machinery or uneven surfaces.

6. Training + signage: the combination that really works

However many signs there are, if staff don't recognise them or ignore them, they're useless. It's key that wayfinding is complemented by practical training and regular reminders.

Also, if workers take part in designing or reviewing the signage, they will be more likely to respect it and interpret it correctly.

Where to start if you think your factory needs to improve?

Ask yourself these questions:

Are there broken, dirty or barely visible signs?

Is it quickly clear what to do or avoid?

Does the signage follow the logical route through the plant?

Is everything up to date with the latest changes?

If the answer to any of them is “no” or “I don't know”, it may be time to review your signage system.

En el entorno industrial, una señalización clara no es un extra: es una necesidad.
